The Florida Bar Tax Section’s 2025 Directors’ Meeting in Key West was a perfect blend of professional insights, strategic planning, and island-style fun. Held at the luxurious Pier House Resort & Spa and its sister property, La Concha Key West, this gathering was as much about serious tax law as it was about soaking in the laid-back charm of the Conch Republic.

Friday, January 24, 2025: Kicking Off in Style

The Directors’ Meeting began at 1:00 PM, setting the stage for a packed agenda. Chair Mark Scott welcomed attendees and led discussions on key issues, including updates on long-range planning, committee reports, and legislative initiatives. The meeting featured insights from Tax Section leadership, past chairs, and committee heads, who provided updates on federal and state tax law, educational programs, and membership growth.

After an afternoon of serious tax talk, attendees traded spreadsheets for cocktails on a breathtaking Sunset Cruise Cocktail Reception. With the sun dipping below the horizon and the ocean breeze in the air, tax professionals networked in the most picturesque setting possible. It was a true Key West experience—relaxing, yet filled with stimulating discussions about the latest in tax law.

Saturday, January 25, 2025: Tax & Tours

Saturday kicked off bright and early with a Past Chairs CLE, titled “Sunsets and What May Be on the Horizon …” Led by seasoned tax professionals—including Cristin Keane, Michael Lampert, Mark Brown, Shawn Wolf, and Joel Maser—this session tackled upcoming tax law changes and policy shifts in light of the new administration. The audience gained invaluable perspectives on how these developments could impact Florida taxpayers and legal practitioners alike.

Following a morning of intellectual rigor, attendees had the option to explore Key West in true tourist fashion with local tours and activities, including a group Trolley Tour around the island. This classic island adventure was the perfect way to mix business with pleasure, offering attendees a chance to soak in the city’s history while engaging in lively tax discussions with colleagues.

The day wrapped up with a Chair’s Reception, a chance to toast to another successful meeting, followed by the Directors’ Dinner at Bel Mare, where attendees indulged in fine dining while continuing to strengthen professional relationships.

Takeaways and Looking Ahead

The 2025 Directors’ Meeting was more than just an opportunity to discuss tax law—it was a celebration of the Tax Section’s community, its commitment to education, and its strategic vision for the future. From tackling serious tax policy to enjoying a conch train ride, this Key West retreat proved that the best tax meetings are the ones that balance work and play.

As we look ahead, the Tax Section’s dedication to professional development and advocacy remains strong. With new leadership initiatives, upcoming CLEs, and continued outreach to new tax lawyers, the future of Florida’s tax law community is bright—and maybe even a little sun-kissed.
